Well the new year is in full swing and after a brief hiatus to catch our breath(actually humping at the good ol' 9 to 5), DISCO'S REVENGE is back with a pre-Valentine special with special guest, NEKSTONE(filling in for Israel Marcano). We've had Nekstone(aka Brandon Ayala) out to Disco's Revenge before and he rocked it HARD!!!

The El Paso native has been doing his thing for quite something and hosts local party THE GET RIGHT . His sets are heavy on vibe and his track selection is superb(to say the least). Here is a sample of his craftsmanship to put you in the mood...

For this edition we will be setting up shop at the ELM STREET BAR in historic Deep Ellum. This is our first time to host a event at Elm Street but the venue has recently hosted some great parties with internationally renowned artists such as Doc Link and Elon.

As the holidays are fast approaching we decided it was time to put on our next party so we are hosting a little soiree at ZUBAR on Saturday Dec. 3rd.

To add to the merriment THREE OLIVES VODKA will be in the house promoting their latest flavor creation...just in the nick of time for the seasonal festivities.

And keeping with the holiday spirit we will be taking part in CAPTAIN HOPE'S KIDS annual "Coats For Kids" donation drive which hopes to provide 500 NEW winter coats for homeless children in the metroplex. We will have a donation box set up so you can just drop your donation off with no hassles.

Okay, Okay...I know it's been a minute or two...BUT...we're back...just in time for Halloween...so you know this edition is gonna be off the richter scale. For the second Halloween in a row DISCO'S REVENGE is taking over the backroom of Zubar. As a matter of fact, Zubar is where our little party got its start NYE almost two years ago...(video)...wow...its been that long...seems like only yesterday.

Last Halloween was a blast, with a varied assortment of ghouls, goblins, zombies, sexy nurses & slutty nuns grooving and grinding away to the thumping beat....ahhhh...the memories...

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Dallas' Native Son DEMARKUS LEWIS

For this next installment of our interview series we are staying close to home with Dallas' very own Demarkus Lewis.

"D"(as he is called by close friends) is one of dance music's most consistent artists(having released 100's of original productions & remixes) over the course of the past decade.

In addition to his highly sought after production work, Demarkus' skills on the decks are in demand in exotic locales such as Moscow, Berlin, Rotterdam and London.

Recently relocating back to Dallas after a few years in London, we sat down with Demarkus to ask him a few questions covering a wide range of subjects...enjoy.

First off, In order to get everyone up to speed, I'd like to ask you about your start in the music industry. Can you give a brief synopsis on your start as a dj and your progression into music production?

Well it all began in 1990 for me when I was introduced to dance music. Back then it was mostly tecno for me with bits and pieces of Hip Hop and retro music. As natural progression would have it (after being heavily submerged in the Dallas underground scene as a Dj/promoter) I took steps to begin learning the craft of music production. My first release came out on a local Dallas label called Swerve. Shortly after I started a label with long time best friends Brett Johnson, James Oliver and Mark Garey called Aesoteric Records.

You've built up quite a musical resume over the years with well over 100+ releases on dozens upon dozens of labels and have been able to stay relatively consistent in the volatile world of dance music. What advice would you give any up & coming dj/producer who has aspirations of having a sustained career in the industry?

I often tell new producers to always do what that love and that it is very important to stay true to themselves as artists. Chasing new trends and genres is ok as long as you stay original in your efforts. Also its not about what you use to create music it's more about how you use what you have. Today the game is so different from when I first began. It's overly saturated now so to stand out these days you must be original in nature.

You recently moved back to the states after living abroad in London for a few years. How did living in such an international city impact your view(s) on the currant state of dance music here in the U.S.?

Well London is regarded as one of the music capitols of the world. I've noticed the main difference between the dance music culture there and here is very simple. Europeans don't complain about how 'things used to be' they are using all that energy to create new movements. We as Americans need to stop dwelling on the past and push forward into the future!

Even though the event got some bad press due to the unfortunate death of a attendee; you had the opportunity to play the Dallas leg of the Electric Daisy Carnival over the summer, how was your overall experience with the festival?

The electric daisy event was amazing. It was so great to see that America has embraced the idea of the festival events and has dropped the word Rave from the vocabulary. 22000 plus party goers and one incident .. Unfortunate but over all strictly amazing. Dubstep ruled the land this day but I like it all.. Good music is good!

You recently released a full length album "Mental Notes" on your label, Grin Music. What are some current and/or upcoming projects that your fans should be on the lookout for?

I've been working on a few things now. My new album is almost complete and should be out before the new year. I just released a remix package on my label Grin Music called behind closed doors with my good friends EMan from NYC. Expect several remixes as well as my sub label Grin Traxx relaunch which will be showcasing true disco filter house vibe from the 90s. First release will be by myself under my Leg Warmers alias. Plus lookout for several releases on oaklands Guesthouse Music this fall/winter.

You've had the opportunity to work with some legendary producers in your career, who would you love to collaborate with that you haven't had the chance to work with as of yet?

I'm currently waiting on remix parts from Glenn Underground. He is one of my biggest inpsirations. I've done a remix for Blaze but would love to do an original with Josh Milan. Also Reel Soul, Abicah Soul, Atjazz, marlon D, Masta keV and many more are on my list.

As for the tracks that never leave my bag I must say now that I play serato none of my tracks ever leave my bag. It really just depends on the gig and the vibe I guess. My traxsource charts accurately represent what I Play.

Locally, where can we find you?

Locally here in Dallas you can catch me once a month at Zubar and other times at various spots around town. This Halloween we are revisiting an old tradition called Discoween which we bring in Boo Williams from Chicago to play all rare disco treats. This will be October 29th at Elm Street Bar (deep ellum).

Okay friends and family, we are coming back to the Absinthe Lounge for more in the month of September(Friday the 9th) with a special edition of DISCO'S REVENGE. Last month's edition was a blast and this one will be even more insane(we all know how Virgos love a good party).

This is gonna be a good one with resident dj's Israel Marcano and Mr. Daishiki Jones(throwing down a very special set for fellow Virgos) manning the decks...so this night has debauchery written all over it.

We've been busy spreading the DISCO'S REVENGE seed across the nation and around the globe(check out the recent interviews with the Snuff Crew from Germany, Lady D from Chicago and Duane Harriott from NYC). EXCLUSIVE: First U.S. Interview with Germany's SNUFF CREW

What's that old saying about how music works in cycles? That adage is even true in the underground music scene(see: the whole "nu disco"phenom) .

DISCO'S REVENGE is proud to introduce an act that has taken the old school Chicago "jack" and "acid house" sound and updated it for the 21st. century.

German based dj/producers, SNUFF CREW takes a decidedly "retro" approach to their music and if you close your eyes and listen, their music sounds as if you are transported back in time to a warehouse in Chicago in the late '80's during the formative years of House Music.

Performing in masks to hide their identity, Eins & Zwei are dedicated to preserving that "raw" feel of early Chicago House and Detroit techno. Their music is featured in the sets of a virtual "who's who" of international dj talent such as Seth Troxler, Larry Tee, Danny Howells, Luke Solomon, DJ Deep, Dubfire, A-Trak, Tim Sweeney and John Digweed.

What follows is a interview where they discuss their early influences, the nightlife scene in Berlin and their label, Snuff Trax.

Your sound is unique amongst many current artists for the fact that you have taken a decidedly "retro" approach that harkens back to early Chicago "jack" sound of labels such as Trax and DJ International. What were some early influences that helped to shape your style of djing and production?

It´s always hard to mention only a few names. But on one side we are of course strongly influenced by the 80´s Chicago House stuff from artists like Farley Jackmaster Funk, Chip E, Tyree, DJ Pierre, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, Adonis, Fast Eddie (...) and also by recordings of the legendary Hot Mix 5 shows on WBMX. On the other side Techno, House and Acid from the early 90s was important for us. Releases from people like Laurent Garnier, LFO, Underworld, Hardfloor, Josh Wink and some others still kick us. All in all we can say that we are influenced by music that makes your body jack and that lets you scream and sweat on the dancefloor.

Can you give us a brief background on the reason you perform with masks and remain anonymous in this age of "superstar" djs and will there ever come a time when you will forgo the masks?

We always say: Music should be the main thing, not the people who make it. This is the the reason, why we wear masks. And actually we are far away from being superstars (unfortunately :-) )

Your remix of the Billy Ray Martin and Hard Ton´s remake of seminal Chicago classic "Fantasy Girl" was released earlier this year and you have remixed Chicago legend, Robert Owens; are you planning on any future projects with some of the old school legends?

We also made a track with Robert (for Snuff Trax 005: "Clarity") and Mr K'Alexi Shely remixed the Raiders of the lost ARP release (Snuff Trax 004).
At the moment we are working on our next Snuff Crew album. This one will feature some great international guests like Kim Ann Foxman, Hard Ton and some others

It appears that Germany has become somewhat of a European centre for House Music in general and "deep house" specifically, what makes Germany such a nightlife destination spot and which parties/clubs would you recommend?

Well the reason for the popularity is actually only one city: Berlin. Many artists, producer, labelmakers, DJs and other creative people moved to here in the last years. The advantage of Berlin is maybe that it is no typical German city. It´s more an international hot spot where still more things are possible than in any other German city. For some people it became hyped too much, but Snuff Crew loves Berlin and one half of us moved to there.
In the city you can discover a lot of great small clubs and also some bigger venues with a fantastic music program. For us Berghain is still the most inspiring place, but we also like a lot of other venues.

You mentioned some of your early influences, can you share with us what current artists help to inspire you?

Well there are also a lot of great current artists and labels that inspire us. First of all the releases and sets of our friends KiNK & Neville Watson, Andreas Gehm, Hard Ton, Photonz, Steffi & Virginia, Kim Ann Foxman, Dance Disorder, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Tiger & Woods and many more.
Also releases from labels like Ostgut Ton, Skylax, Compost, Killekill, Rush Hour, Clone, Mojuba, Mathematics etc etc.

Can you give us some background on your label, Snuff Trax?

Snuff Trax is our playground. We´ve released our 5th record now - Snuff Crew feat Robert Owens - Clarity (with remixes by Steffi and Andreas Gehm)
Snuff Trax 006 will feature tracks by Humandrone from Japan and remixes by our Italian jackmates Marcello Napoletano and Simoncino..

Your live show is pretty intense. You use the latest technology to produce a "retro" sound. For the gear heads and techies out there, give us a brief description of your setup?

Our equipment live on stage is really minimized. We use two Macbooks, some controllers and effects... That´s it. We always do a kind of jam session with samples and elements of released and unreleased tracks. So every set is different and we like this fact very much.

Outside of Germany, what are some of your favorite places to play and have you plans to come to the U.S. or North America in general?

Actually we enjoy every gig in every city in every country that invites us. But especially the shows in Japan, Russia, Romania, Italy and Portugal were special! We hope to get booked to the US or North America soon. Would be great to do a little tour and jack with our fans..

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Chicago DJ LADY D (D'lectable Music)

Darlene Jackson aka DJ Lady D, has been a fixture on the dance music scene for some time now. Besides being a dj, she can stake claim to being one of the hardest working people in the biz. Producer, label owner, vocalist and A&R are just a few of the hats she wears in a days work.

DISCO'S REVENGE had the chance to chat with her on various topics including her start, the changes in the dance music scene and her recent performance at the Lollapalooza festival.

Hey, D for the sake of brevity,can you give us a bit of background as to how you got started as a dj and who were some of your major influences?

I was playing records for fun in a shoestore one Saturday when Chicago's biggest party promoter came in watched me a while and told me to call him. He began to book me almost immediately and it took off from there. I used to watch and listen to Derrick Carter, Diz, Sneak, Ralphi Rosario & Teri Bristol & Psychobitch (they played together back then) for my influences. They are still my favorites to this day.

You were a part of the groundbreaking "SuperJane" collective, how did that relationship develop?

I had been playing for a couple years already when I was approached by Dayhota (Shannon Ialongo) about an idea she said she and Colette and Heather had and was considering starting a collective and they were looking for a fourth member to keep it balanced. I told her I would be down. I already had a collective I had started that was me and six other guys (Jevon Jackson, Mel Hammond, Frique, Matty, E Smoove & Mark Grant) called FSO - For Soul Only, but the idea of a collective of girls was appealing, since I was friends with them already and you know girl power and everything.

It seems that with the advances in technology there are more dj's then ever before. What makes a Lady D set stand out from everyone else?

You're right! So many out there! I think a Lady D stands apart for a few reasons. My playlist being the first as I don't play things most other DJ's are playing. I dig deep to find music that is amazing that no one else is up on yet--why not? There is so much music out there. I shouldn't have to play anything someone else is playing-at least not for the sake of it being popular. I throw in some familiar elements but my music is pretty unique and current! The other thing is my performance level. When I get on the decks it's pure energy and I don't let up until I get off so my performance is dynamic and stands out. Finally, it's what I can do instinctively as well as technically behind the decks. I have enough experience to pump up any room I play.

What changes have you noticed in the underground music scene from when you started to the current state of the biz...both positive and negative?

The underground music scene has undergone some changes in the vibrancy and age of people. I do see younger people coming into the scene now more than a few years ago so that's a good sign. As people get older they get more mature musically. Some of the scene has become more resistant to change or to partying with younger kids. The flipside of that is that there are lots of burgeoning underground scenes with newer people doing newer things. I'm happy that I've stayed relevant with some of these new undergrounds that have been popping up. I make it a point to be open to checking out their parties and getting to know some of the new promoters and party kids.

You recently performed at the recent Lollapalooza festival in Chicago alongside such diverse acts as Scrillex, Kid Cudi, Cee Lo, Eminem, Glitch Mob, Coldplay, Afrojack, Girl Talk and Collie Buddz and one of your songs was included in their annual remix contest. How did your participation in such a prestigious event develop and how was it performing in front of over 20,000 dance music fans?

I went to Lolla in 2009 and was blown away by the whole thing. I was a guest of Thievery Corporation so I had all access and it made me want to be a part of it. I wrote myself an email to find out about playing Lolla. I wanted it to be the next year but as Lolla approached I realized it may not happen in 2010. What did happen was I was invited to a party with the Lolla organizers from Austin based C3 where we met and hit it off. They had heard good things about me and said they were interested in having me play in 2011. In January they kept their word and I got a phone call. That email served as a visualization that manifested itself into the actual thing.

Once I was at Lolla, it was incredible to be an artist. The stage was absolutely massive and the sound was phenomenal and I got a real education on advancing a show as big as that one. I put together a team (production manager, tour manager, PR point person) so I could handle everything that was coming in for the show. I began rehearsing a set so I would be on point and believe me--it was! The feeling was everything I hoped it would be and more.

Your label, D'lectable was re-launched in 2009. What do you have in store in the near future?

D'lectable is distributed digitally by a company in Germany called Finetunes. They have relationships with over 140 different download sites. My last release was in June with an artist from NYC named Baghdaddy and because of my summer schedule the next two won't be out until September and October. One is a release by a production partnership called Adam & Jackson. The other release will be my first fully licensed mixed compilation for sale since Naked Kaleidoscope. The tracks will be of the future sound of Chicago with cuts from the house and techno community both of which I work intimately with; including such names as Colette, Green Velvet, Kate Simko, Tevo Howard, Ron Carroll, Gurtz and a whole lot more. I will be touring around the release both domestically and internationally.

DISCO'S REVENGE and "HOUSE" invade The Fallout Lounge 7-30-11

Okay DISCO'S REVENGE family, get ready for some complete lunacy this time because we are taking our little party "on the road"(sort of). For this edition we are dropping in at The Fallout Lounge in Exposition Park on the outskirts of Deep Ellum. If you haven't been yet, the Fallout has been described as the "antithesis" of the city's "see- and- be- seen, must- be- on- the- guest- list meat markets". The Fallout was voted Dallas' Best nightclub by the Dallas Observer in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

It's the first time we've set up shop at the Fallout, and we are planning a good one. We are calling this one "HOUSE" as we do it "old school" style for the 21st century.

As always, we will be have reinforced sound for that extra ( ((KICK)) ) and wonderful light show to go along with the ha, ha, ha, ha, HOUSE MUSIC to keep your bodies moving on the dancefloor. Interview with DUANE HARRIOTT (Bim Marx, Negroclash)

NYC resident Duane Harriott wears many hats within the world of dj culture and the music industry in general, be it as a promoter, deejay, producer, remixer, record store manager, etc. ... to say he is a workaholic is an understatement.

Duane built a name for himself with the highly respected NEGROCLASH events with DJ Lindsey and Prince Language which welcomed diverse talent such as DJ Red Alert, Larry Heard aka Mr. Fingers, Kurtis Mantronik and Afrika Bambaataa just to name a few.

Duane's also part of BIM MARX, a re-edit/remix project who have remixed groups such as Cubic Zirconnia's "Black & Blue" and The Phenomenal Handclap Band's "15 to 20" and have released a few hot EP's on the StillLove4Music label...click.

DISCO'S REVENGE had a chance to ask Duane a few questions...enjoy.

First off, your taste in music is pretty eclectic, where and how did you develop your ear?

It probably just comes with my namesake. Music was always a huge part of my growing up experience. My father is from Kingston Jamaica and my Mother was from Louisiana. My mother played piano, my Father is a percussionist and choir director. My Sis is a pretty accomplished Gospel and Jazz pianist and singer. My uncle Derrick is a legendary Reggae producer and my Uncle Chester is a world renowned Cabaret performer in the UK. My Father collected a ton of records and there was a lot eclectic music played in the house everything from Bob Marley and Steely Dan, to Andrae Crouch and Vivaldi.I studied the Violin and Trombone from age 5 -16 years old and picked up my music theory there. I also got involved with Deejaying at an early age. I had a radio show on a local community radio station in Lincoln, Nebraska when i was 14 years old and that continued in College. I guess what i'm trying to say is that I was blessed to have a family that exposed me to music at an early age and encouraged me to appreciate all aspects of music to some extent.

Where can one catch you spinning? Either locally in NYC, nationally or internationally?

I have 2 monthly parties that i do in NYC. One at Trophy Bar in WIlliamsburg, Brooklyn on the last Saturday of the month. The second is at Submercer in Soho on the 3rd Friday of every month. My old crew Negroclash (Prince Language, Dj Lindsey and myself) is back on the scene and we're throwin a series of reunion parties in 2011. The first one is
going down on 1/21/11. I'll probably be hittin the UK and Germany again sometime in the spring. I'll keep ya posted!!

Can you speak on your Bim Marx project? What is the inspiration behind the series?

Bim Marx consists of myself and my very good friend Jorge Velez aka Professor Genius. We were East Village drinkin and clubbin' homiess for years before we started to make music together and one day we were hangin out together and we just started to make tracks and edits to amuse ourselves and to give away to friends of ours. Jerome Derradji (Stilov4music labelhead) and I played a gig together 3 1/2 years ago and I passed him a disc of Bim Marx stuff after it was over. He got real excited about what he heard and offered to put it out.
We just want to make some raw, funky emotional shit that follows the aesthetic put forth by some of our heroes (namely Danny Krivit, Ron Hardy, Tony Humphries, Nicky Siano and Juan Atkins).
I think that at the time we started this project we felt we weren't hearing enough grits-n-gravy in the edits/nu-disco stuff that was coming out at the time. Instead of complaining, we went to work to remedy that in our own small way. The remix work we've down is markedly different from the edits though. It's not something we planned, but I'm really happy it's turning out like this.

I first became aware of you thru your Negroclash events, can you relate (to those that may not be aware) the impetus that sparked this long running event in NYC?

Ha ha ha..that party came about rather spontaneously. Around 2002, Electroclash was all of the rage in NYC.. The parties were huge happenings,but the music, in our opinion, wasn't very good. My friends Prince Language, DJ Lindsey Caldwell and myself found ourselves at one of those parties and we were being all catty, sh*t talkin it.I think we all kind of looked at each other and decided we could do better.

"Negroclash" was an inside joke amongst our friends, poking fun at the fact that there were hardly any black people at the party and that they never really played any old "Electro" there. We were wondering how you could call yourselves "Electro" anything and not play "Planet rock" or Cybotron and we'd be like "oh that's negroclash, that ain't electroclash". But then the more we talked about it, the more it seemed like a good idea. So we brought all of our heroes out to spin with us (Juan Atkins, Curtis Mantronix, Larry Heard, Maurice Fulton, Marshall Jefferson).

They were all, epic , spontaneous and desperately needed in NYC. We threw the party as a monthly for about 4 and half years at APT, but it was pretty exhausting, so we discontinued it for a while. Since then, we've thrown about 1 or two a year and they still go off. I was in Hamburg deejaying last October and there was a girl I met there who went to a Negroclash party when Juan Atkins was a guest and she said that night pretty much changed her life. Moments like that keep me humble and motivated to do this music thang and keep at it.

I noticed that the Bim Marx EP's are released on black labeled vinyl with no information. Are they strictly vinyl releases and is this a conscious effort to remain anonymous? And where can we find your re-edits / remixes / productions?

I think Jerome Derradjii, the founder of stilov4music, could answer that question better. Derradjii runs that label and runs Still Music as well. I believe the idea behind the label was to make the music stand on it's own. It's the idea that the music is being presented purely on its own terms, with no pretense.

How do you feel that the advances in technology has impacted the dance music community both positive and negative? From the aesthetic of the deejay to the demise of vinyl, record store closures, rise of the laptop deejay, etc

I like the convenience of mp3's and i like the fact that you can present the music on your own terms and cut out the middle man (record labels) if you choose to do it. Serato and tractor and ableton are great tools and i've seen a lot of amazing sets from DJ's who utilize those tools to the fullest. I've also seen some of the most frustrating and laziest sets from some very well known DJ's who should know better.

MP3's, for the most part sound terrible and i've heard some of the most horribly mastered dance tracks in the past couple of years from producers who have no idea how a record is suppose to sound on vinyl, because they've been playing compressed tracks for so long now. The blogging culture is great because it can connect a lone techno fan from a small town in Idaho with a community of likeminded individuals from all around the world. How cool would that have been to be able to do that back when we were teens?

The downside is that the dance community is really fickle now and people value the music less, because there's less personal investment in it. I don't think that a lot of people like something now'cuz they think it's great music..i think they like it 'cuz it's new music.Once it's not new anymore, there's no real reason for them to revisit it. You don't have to stare at this cd or record in your collection anymore, you can just delete the mp3 and forget about it forever.
If you a buy a record, cd, tape, etc. You're already a bit more emotionally invested in it. But you also can't force people to buy something that they believe they should have for free.

Besides the Bim Marx thingie, what other things are you working on that we should be looking out for in 2011?

Well..expect some more Bim Marx edits and an ep of original Bim Marx stuff very soon. I run a blog with my friend Eli Escobar called Outside Broadcast that y'all can check out as well.

DISCO'S REVENGE presents DEMARKUS LEWIS' Homecoming and Album Release Party @ Absinthe Lounge

Saturday January, 15th we are proud to host the welcome home party at Absinthe Lounge for one of Dallas' native sons who has gone on to become an internationally respected producer and deejay.

Demarkus got his start spinning at events on local underground house scene and eventually took it a step further and began to experiment with production. Well over a decade and over 100 releases later he has left an indelible mark on the underground scene, locally, nationally and on a global level.

In addition to this being his homecoming, this event will mark the release date for his debut album, "Mental Notes" (Grin Music) which is a blend of soulful and deep house joints.

Just want to take the time to highlight some new music of note that has been heating up our decks recently(if you were at the Absinthe Lounge this past Saturday, you can relate) first up is the latest by NY based dj/ producer, Dennis Ferrer:

Dennis had a MAJOR hit last year with the tech-house monster, "Hey Hey" and 'The Red Room" is another track along the same vein that is set to be a stormer for dancefloors around the world...this has EXTREME "crossover" written all over it and will appeal to underground heads and the casual club-goer alike...

One of the remixers is 19 yr old Detroit wunderkind, Kyle Hall... which brings us to the next track in question which is a remix of hightly touted Manchester, England alternative-dance band Delphic (think Stone Roses).

Kyle's interpretation is rooted in Detroit techno-soul and he goes for the old fashioned "addition by subtraction" production technique, as he deconstructs the song and uses sparse elements of the vocal along with some pretty tasty muted drum patterns...21st century classic.

Mr. Daishiki Jones credits his personal style and taste in music to having gone to clubs in Chicago in the mid- to late-'80s, which helped him "soak in the fresh vibrant music, fashion, and culture" of the time. Not long thereafter, the house music DJ started spinning when he moved from Gary, Indiana, to Dallas.

Almost immediately, he found himself submerged in Dallas' underground dance music scene., when all the equipment he boasted was a single turntable, a tape deck and a Radio Shack Realistic mixer.

"Pretty primitive compared to today's technology." Jones admits.

But he's come a ways from those early days--and he's played a multitude of shows in and around Dallas over the years.

So what sets him apart from other DJs in the city?

"One thing that sets me apart is my passion," he says.

How long have you been DJing for?
I started spinning back in 1989 or1990, when I moved to Dallas from Gary, Indiana. I had one turntable and a tape deck (remember those?) along with a cheap Radio Shack Realistic mixer and I would record songs on tape and mix back and forth between the two.

How did you get your start DJing?
Well, it started with me going to clubs in Chicago and listening to the radio as a teenager. Before I was old enough to go out, I would listen to radio stations WBMX and WGCI with DJs such as The Hot Mix 5 and Super Mix 6 and the things they were doing on the radio was a representation of what was (then) a new culture, which was being called "house." Once I was old enough to go clubbing, my friends and I would make the short drive to Chicago and soak in the fresh vibrant music, fashion, and culture. After experiencing this I knew I wanted to DJ.

What was your first gig like?
My first gig was back in the early '90s at a place called S.O.A. which would go on to become a hub for the underground dance music scene in the mid- to late-'90s, and even later when the location became known as Minc. S.O.A. had just opened up and a friend of mine named Keith Pillars hired me to play at his event called "Show and Tell." The other DJs for the party, Tim Shumaker, Clayton Acklin, along with Keith, would play an influential part in helping to spearhead the underground house or "rave" culture locally, here in Dallas.

Who/what are some of your biggest influences musical or otherwise?
First off, my biggest influence DJ-wise would have to be the legendary Ron Hardy (R.I.P.). After my first trip to the Music Box, words can't come close to describing his influence. My biggest influences music-wise would have to be the Chicago DJ/producers who laid the groundwork for an entire generation of young men and women across the globe to enjoy what would become known as "UK Rave" or "Acid House" culture. Without DJs like Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Wayne Williams, Lil Louis, Leonard Remix Rroy, there would be no Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Rusko etc.

How would you describe your personal style?
That's a hard question to tackle. I don't like to pigeonhole myself. House music DJs originally were pretty diverse with their playlists, and personally I like my sets to reflect the overall diversity of house music culture. I might drop varied and seemingly disparate (to some) genres like tech house along with some nu disco and maybe some deep or afro or jackin house in the same set.

Which DJ's do you follow? Do you have a favorite?
That's another tough one. Nowadays, it seems like everyone and their mama is a DJ, so its hard to pick a "favorite." I do try to listen to as many DJs as possible because you never know what hot music you are going to be exposed to. For example, a few years ago I was listening to local DJ Kelle Marie spin and she dropped a dope track that I'd never heard before. The track in question turned out to be called "Rej" by German group Âme, which became one of my favorite tracks to spin. DJs that I try to follow include, but aren't limited to, Theo Parrish, Gene Hunt, Karizma, DJ Jus Ed, Mike Dunn, Snuff Crew, Franck Rogers, the Martinez Brothers... I could go on for days.

What's your favorite genre of music, both to play and to listen to?
I love disco,which is where house music (for the most part) comes from. But I also grew up on the blues, soul, hip-hop, a bit of gospel and a bit of rock 'n' roll.

How do you decide what songs you're going to play?
It all depends on various factors, and a very important factor is the ability to read the crowd. With my Disco's Revenge event, I always want to complement my partner's [Woody Rosen] style. Woody's sound is geared towards deep soulful vocal house, so I try to maintain a healthy balance between our two styles.

How much preparation goes into putting a set together?
For any self-respecting DJ, preparation should be at the top of the list. For me, DJing is like a form of communication between the crowd and myself, and my job is to connect to them. Knowing what songs or tracks to play (and when to play them) is all part of the preparation.

What are your main objectives when it comes to playing music? (Are you looking to entertain the crowd, educate them, or something different altogether?)
I think all three. If I'm able to give people--especially those with no knowledge of the culture--"something different," then perhaps I can turn someone on to a new culture and maybe they will want to "educate" themselves to the music and culture.

What can someone expect when they come to see/hear you play?
Well, if someone comes to a Disco's Revenge-related event, they will hear the best music available, and they will see people dancing and singing to the beat.

What kind of equipment do you use?
Vinyl, CDs, Technics turntables, Pioneer CDJs, and whatever other equipment the venue has available.

Requests. Love em or hate em?
I love to hate them. Do I look like a jukebox?

If you could play a gig anywhere, with any other DJ/music act, whom would you play with and where would it be?
Anywhere in the world that has a first-rate sound system and people who are plugged into the music and culture and I would be happy.

What sets you apart from other DJs in Dallas/Denton/Fort Worth?
One thing that sets me apart is my passion. Being from the Chicago area and growing up around the culture allows me to have a different perspective on the scene as a whole. The same can be said for someone who loves house music from NYC or Los Angeles or San Francisco for that matter. I think we respect and understand the overall music and culture a bit more.

When/where will you be playing next?
Monday, October 11, I'm scheduled for Cool Out at the Cavern. Saturday, October 30, I'm throwing a Disco's Revenge Halloween party at Zubar and, Saturday November 6, Disco's Revenge will be celebrating Woody Rosen's birthday at the Absinthe Lounge.

What can Dallas expect to see from you in 2010?

Just want to let you know that we will be spinning some Deep House and disco jams at legendary vinyl emporium, Bill's Records Sunday September 26th. from 2pm-6pm.

This event was put together by DJ Israel Marcano of W.A.R.M.T.H. International who will also be joining Woody Rosen and Mr Daishiki Jones of DISCO'S REVENGE.

Bill's Records holds a special place in the hearts of electronic music fans locally, nationally and internationally. Locally, many of the dj's who would later become the foundation of Dallas' nascent "electronic" music scene in the late 1980's, got their start by purchasing vinyl from Bill's when it was located on Spring Valley & Coit in North Dallas. Bill's was "ground zero" for underground dance music culture and much of the music sold within its four walls would go on the provide the soundtrack for what would soon become known as "house" and "rave" culture.

Besides influencing the local scene, Bill's played host to a virtual "who's who" of visiting dance music artists/ dj's, everyone from Doc Martin to Ron Trent to Scott "Smokin" Silz to Theo Parrish stopped in to pick up some fresh music....

This is our way to say thanks and pay homage to Dallas' unsung hero of underground House Music culture.

Describe the music you play: I have always described what I play as deep soulful house music, which can really be a lot of things. It draws on everything from jazz to R&B to funk and disco, gospel, or even Afro-beat sort of stuff. It's what you would probably hear if you went to an underground party in NYC.

What's the one track you can always fall back on to steer your set in the right direction? Anything that is familiar to a lot of people. Usually, any of those old fun tracks from the '90s will work, but I try not to overdo that.

Tell us one of the strangest requests — song or otherwise — you’ve received from a listener: We had this one dude that would come into Minc sometimes. Once, he came up to me and my friend in the DJ booth and said he was going to bring in a guest DJ the next week. When I asked if he had a demo, his reply was, “That’s the problem with Iraq!” He looked at us like we were crazy, stared me directly in the eyes for about 10 seconds, then walked away.

What's a new (or new to you) track you plan on incorporating into your next playlist, and why? It's hard to pick out any one song in particular, but for the past year or so I have been working in a little more disco, along the lines of Italo disco or Paradise Garage tracks. It's a sound that I think a lot of the younger newcomers are into, and it's also fun and interesting for me to dig into those old songs and branch out in that direction a little.

Describe your fantasy DJ gig: My dream gig would be to have a weekly party at a place with a crowd that knows and understands the music, somewhere that isn't restricted by a 2 a.m. curfew, and has an amazing sound system.

Better than: seeing the bad guy from theSonic the Hedgehog games in a live concert. Well, maybe.

Fresco has been putting on parties in Dallas for years, bringing to town legends of electronic music such as Larry Heard, Ron Trent, Theo Parrish (the list goes on).

So, naturally, they had a hand in bringing through Maurizio Dami, aka Alexander Robotnick, for the first stop in his US tour. In this case, the night was put together through a collaboration between Fresco and Axel Promotions.

Robotnick needs no introduction to many, but in this city, he's not what one would consider a well-known figure.

When he released "Problemes D'Amour" in 1983, the record immediately became influential in both the disco and nascent house scenes of New York and Chicago, as well as the dancefloors of Europe. He's credited by some as helping to invent the genre known as electro, and, even in some ways, acid house, through his pioneering use of the Roland TB-303 Bass Line synthesizer.

Robotnick's Friday the 13th DJ set was his first ever in Dallas--and the last-minute venue change to the Brooklyn Jazz Café ended up being the best part about the night.

Not taking place in the café area itself, but rather in the adjoining performance space just below, the event had all the darkness and warehouse-y feelings you could ask for. Also, it was big enough for the crowd--but not so big that the room felt empty.

The night was kicked off early by a set from Myles Francis, which was followed subsequently by Alvin Booth. Booth, a longtime staple of the Dallas house community and a regular performer at Fresco events, made sure to bring some classic records like Derrick May's "Strings of Life" (well, the Danny Krivit edit, at least), and played a clean and well-executed all-vinyl set. Booth's performance had underground dance music purists in mind, and he honored the past with his set, which ended up being rather ironic in light of Robotnick's performance that followed.

It's not that Robotnick didn't play old Italo hits like Charlie's "Spacerwoman" and Telex's "Moskow Diskow," and even some old Chicago acid like Mike Dunn; he did.

But, apart from some spurts of recognizable classics, his set consisted almost exclusively of pretty standard, unimaginative and unoriginal European dance music.

His all-Ableton laptop set began almost immediately with a rendition of "Problemes D'Amour," in which he sang live vocals and did his characteristic goofy dancing around that so charmed the audience. Afterward, however, something interesting began to happen. The unique and tasteful rhythms of his own track began to give way to sounds that were less tasteful and less unique.

For all the surprising minimal techno, tech house and even blog house sounds, though, Robotnick managed to keep changing up his style, never really keeping on the same tip for too long. The problem was that he kept going into different styles that didn't appeal to his fans. Those who came thinking he was going to dip heavily into the worlds of Italo disco, Italian electro a la Pigna and Nature records, disco classics and perhaps some classic house and techno, would leave disappointed with his selection.

But considering that he's been out of the electronic music game since the late '80s and picked it up again in 2003 and, really, is a 60-year-old man who has missed out on a lot of history, he still managed to do a fine job of working the crowd and being incredibly enthusiastic about his performance. He even played live keys and sang over some tracks from time to time, which is much more than one can say about most other laptop DJs.

In short, you have to give the guy credit. And, in the end, you can't really take anything away from him. Especially because, at the very end of the day, Robotnick finally allowed me--and the rest of the expectant crowd--to wet our whistles on some old-school Italo. And everyone seemed to enjoy that much.

Critic's Notebook
Personal Bias: After interviewing him the day before, I expected Robotnick to play some of the music of the music we discussed in the interview (Marco Passarani, the west coast sound of The Hague). So I was let down when he played a set that would appeal to the electronic music-listening masses.

By The Way: That dude was 60, and dancing around like a maniac! I can't count how many times I heard people say they hope they're that badass at that age.

Random Note: The last, first and only time I've ever been at a venue that hosted jazz alongside electronic music was in Detroit--a place where one can expect such a thing. It was actually very refreshing to see this take place in Dallas

His remixes and orginal productions appear on well respected labels such as Underground Construction, Amenti, ProgCity Deep, Hudd Traxx, 3345 Music, Loveslap! Music and Raum Musik just to name a few.

Alexander has worked with heavyweights in the industry such as Chuck Love, Jimpster, Brett Johnson, JT Donaldson, Atnarko, Rick Preston, Swirl People and Olivier Desmet.

Joining DISCO'S REVENGE residents WOODY ROSEN and MR DAISHIKI JONES will be, DJ Israel Marcano from W.A.R.M.T.H. International will be coming down to the VIPER LOUNGE for an evening of deep house, nu disco, tech house plus much, much more...

Best known in the U.S. for his release "Problems d Amour", Alexander's aka Maurizio Dami track became a hit for a nascent House music scene in Chicago during the early '80's.
